Dealing with a documentary subject involves many stages. From the initial scouting to a true understanding of what's at stake, from the formulation of the project to the definition of an angle of approach for the shots, from the choice of narrative modes to the identification of professionals likely to give visibility to the work, from the study of distribution channels to the prospecting of funding sources, each of these stages is decisive in making a personal photographic approach possible.

Cédric Gerbehaye will draw on his many years of experience as a photographer and filmmaker, as well as his role as a teacher and facilitator at numerous workshops, to guide you through a day rich in exchanges. Making a selection from your images and organizing them into a coherent narrative takes time: you have to know how to mourn the loss of the photographs to which you are attached, and master both content and form. Cédric will read through portfolios of past and current work, and share with you the keys to finding your own methodology and relationship to photography.

Cédric Gerbehaye

Cédric Gerbehaye is a Belgian documentary photographer and film-maker, born in Brussels in 1977. Focusing on the human condition and human rights, his projects explore places both foreign and familiar. He has spent the last two decades pushing the boundaries of his visual storytelling practice, navigating between long-term photographic essays, webdocumentary and feature film.
A National Geographic Explorer and regular contributor to National Geographic Magazine, Cédric is a member of Agence VU and the author of the books Congo in Limbo, Land of Cush, Sète#13 and D'entre eux.
His work has received several international awards, including The Olivier Rebbot Award from the Overseas Press Club of America, a World Press Photo and the Amnesty International Media Award, and is regularly exhibited at festivals abroad. His photographs can be found in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Musée de la Photographie, Charleroi, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris, and the FoMu - FotoMuseum, Antwerp.
His ZOONOSE series, on the COVID-19 pandemic, was awarded the Lucas Dolega International Prize. LA PEINE, his recent and first feature-length documentary, is an intimate and unprecedented plunge into the depths of prison life. By embracing the daily lives of the men and women who live there - inmates, guards and wardens - this film reveals the cracks and hopes of a humanity trying to resist its own negation.
